Battery tips and tricks for smartphones

Increase Your Battery Life & Performance By Applying These Simple Tips & Tricks

With the increasing dependency on smartphones everyone wants their devices to last longer. Its obvious that your battery percentage is not permanent and it will decrease eventually without any control. However users can still control their battery life after applying some simple measures. Yes users can decrease the rate of battery drain in their smartphones until and unless the battery has some physical or chemical damage in it.

Here are some tips to increase your battery life

Turn off or remove unwanted background running apps.
  • Turn on Developer Options (Settings->About phone->Build number Tap seven times on it ).
  • Go to Settings->Developer Options->Check Background turn off unwanted background apps.
For the requirements of some applications they keep on running on the background even though you are not using them. Most of these apps are helpful for user experience and the device's internal tasks but some of them maybe useless and just consuming battery power with no significant purpose. Turn off those useless apps to increase your battery life and RAM performance.

Turn off "Nearby device scanning"
  • Go to Settings->Connections->More connection settings->Nearby device scanning->Turn Off.
"Nearby device scanning" is a setting which is turned on by default on android devices. This feature is for searching any wearables like smartwatches, fitness bands or any other connectable wireless devices near to the devices. When turned on, it is always running in the background consuming some of the battery power. For normal users this feature is of no use an can anytime be turned on when it is necessary. For most cases it is recommended to turn off this setting for small but significant change in battery life.

Turn on "Dark Mode" (For devices with AMOLED displays)
  • Go to Notification Bar/Quick Settings->Dark Mode turn on.
In AMOLED screens if the pixels need to display black then those pixels turn off. So less active pixels means that the screen is consuming less battery. The purpose of Dark mode is to give a black theme to the overall UI and some other supported applications. Hence by turning on Dark mode on AMOLED screens most of the pixels in the screen are turned off due to which the screen consumes less battery. With this Dark mode is also good for your eye comfort.

Restrict Background Data or turn on Data Saver

  • Go to Settings->Connections->Data Usage->Data Saver turn on
(this process may vary according to your device)

There are always some apps using your internet data in the background even if you are not using that app. This surely drains your battery and also wastes your internet data. However you can turn off background data usage of your device by simply turning on "Data saver" or "Restrict background data", this will cut off all background data usage by all your apps and still after turning on these settings your apps will work perfectly fine without any problems. This will save your battery as well as your internet data.

Turn off Notifications from unnecessary apps
  • Go to Settings->Apps (Choose any app you think is unnecessary for notifications)->Permissions->Notifications->Deny
Almost every apps you install wants to send you notifications about that applications. Some of these app notifications are useful because they usually notify you about reminders or news or even calls but some apps send you unwanted and unnecessary notifications like for example a game sending you notification to play the game is unnecessary and uses some battery resources in the background. By turning off notification access for these unnecessary apps you might save a small amount of battery and this is also beneficial if you don't want to get distracted.

Turn off Auto update apps from Play Store
  • Go to Play Store->Menu->Settings->Auto Update apps turn off
This is another background process which can put some pressure on your battery as well as internet data. Simply turn off this and still you can manually update apps saving a lot of battery juice from being wasted in background.

 Do Not Use Live Wallpapers

Live wallpapers may be fun to see and also may add some sort of attractiveness on your home screen but still it consumes a lot of power. Some of these live wall papers also use your phones sensors combine that with screen which takes the most of your battery life and your battery is gone to 0% in minutes. So it is recommended not to use live wallpapers if you want to save battery rather if you have an AMOLED screen then use a black wallpaper.

Use Battery Saver Mode if your battery is very low
  • Go to Settings->Battery->Battery Saver turn on
There are many processes running on your android devices which usually do not show up in settings or which you can't turn off manually. Although many of these processes are essential for your devices there are still some processes without which your devices can still run smoothly. All of these unnecessary processes can be turned off when you turn on battery save mode. After turning on battery saver mode some of the features like Always On Display and NFC but still your devices can run smoothly without these features and also all of the above mentioned tips will be automatically applied so you wont need to do these tips manually.

Here are some habits you need to acquire to have a long lasting battery.

Reduce your charge cycle

It is proven that the lifespan of the lithium ion battery used in your devices depends upon its charge cycles. One full charge cycle is defined as the charging of a battery from 0% to 100%. For instance if  you have already completed 400 charge cycles then the battery life has already been decreased by 20%. To reduce your charging cycle always charge your devices on the basis of a schedule for example in your lunch and dinner time or charge only when the battery is bellow 30%.

Maintain your battery charge between 50% and 80%

To much charge or too low charge increases the battery stress which eventually decreases battery life.
so it is recommended to maintain your battery charge between 50% and 80%. This will also reduce your charge cycle.

Use original chargers

Like us humans a battery's health also depends upon its feeding habits. Original chargers are always engineered as per your battery's requirements and limits. Yes there are some trusted third party chargers but since all third party chargers are not designed for a specific battery of a specific model you still have the risk of degrading your battery. Moreover if you tried to use a fast charger even though your phone doesn't support fast charging and you might end up with complications such as a battery explosion.

Keep your devices at room temperature

Extreme heat or freezing temperatures is harmful for your battery and other components so always try to keep your phones at room temperature. Also remove covers (If you have) whenever you are charging smartphones this will help extra heat to flow out of your smartphone you can do this even when you are playing games or using heavy apps.

Do not instantly install software updates as soon as they arrive

These days all reputed smartphone manufactures are giving monthly minor security updates and some enhancements as well as yearly major software updates. However these newly rolled out updates usually comes with bugs and maximum times these bugs directly affect your battery, So please wait for some time so that if any bugs were discovered they would be solved by developers. By the way you can also turn off Auto download Software Updates in your settings this will also save some battery being used in background and will surely stop downloading updates if you don't want to and later always you can manually allow your device to download the updates whenever you need it.

Reduce the use of fast charging

Fast charging might save you a lot of time but it also gives a lot of stress to your battery. Well if you have a schedule for charging your devices then you might not need fast chargers at all and its highly recommended not to use fast charging whenever you leave your phone to charge overnight. Fast charging also causes a lot of heat. All of the devices have an option to disable fast charging in their settings or you can even use a slow charger from the same manufacturer. So if you want a longer battery life then please use fast charging only when you are in hurry.

Never install battery saver apps

There are hundreds of battery saver apps available at the play store which claim to increase your battery life but please do not install these apps. All of the battery saver apps run in the background which instead of saving consumes more battery and also these apps perform basic tasks like cleaning up your ram, turning of bluetooth and  hotspot which you yourself can do manually without these apps. These apps come with a ton of ads which also consumes your battery and resources. So please do not install these battery saver apps

Change your battery when it is time to

Even after your endless efforts to increase your battery's lifespan all lithium ion batteries degrade to the point when it becomes useless. It is recommended by experts to get a new battery for your phones in every one to two years. However what I recommend is to add some more money and upgrade to a new phone instead of just buying a new battery.

Always research on the smartphone specifications before buying it.

No matter how much you try to increase your battery life its life span is purely limited and dependent to the smartphone's specifications so it is always recommended to first research well on smartphones that you are intending to buy. Please do not buy smartphones which shows a lot of ads in their UI. These ads also use your smartphone's resources so they will always drain your battery and acquire unnecessary space in your RAM and processors. Buy smartphones from trusted manufacturers.

So now you all know how to take care of your battery. Remember that no matter how much strictly apply the above techniques your battery's maximum performance would be limited within its described capacity. All the tips and tricks mentioned above are safe to apply and cause no harm to your devices.
